Art at Gallery 5 - The Carnival of 5 Fires

Gallery 5 is currently showing a collection of works in their "Carnival of 5 Fires" from multiple artists. Molly Crabapple, Wes Freed, and Katelan Foisy to name a few, as well as Amanda Robinson and Bizhan Khodabandeh. The Carnival of 5 Fires is somewhat of an art/Halloween festival showcasing the talents of artists and performers. Each artist featured brings an essential and unique element to the overall "carnival" presentation.
Amanda Robinson's bizarre political sculptures provide an interesting commentary on current events with such sculptures as "The World's Last Genetically Modified Chicken" with posters created by Bizhan Khodabandeh. Her creations are representative of current hot topics (like renewable energy, nuclear weapons, and genetically modified foods); they are presented as if they are memorials to problems from the past, communicating an obvious distaste for all the issues she's targeted. Molly Crabapple's daring illustrations depict outlandish sideshow style characters each with an interesting and colorful backstory communicated through visual cues and text. Wes Freed's grim yet colorful paintings portray a theme of Dixieland and darkness, with stylized characters that manage to combine Americana and the zombie aesthetic. Katelan Foisy brings a more painterly approach to the mix with her subtly unsettling creations. Combining carnival imagery and a wide variety of symbolism her paintings are a refreshing break from the (charming if somewhat campy) carnival-poster style works.
